THE SIGNAL
Fire season produces a specialised vocabulary — Red Flag Warning, Stage 2, Type II, Level 3 — that agencies use fluently and residents mostly do not. The Oregon posts that travelled furthest this summer did the unglamorous work of defining the term inside the alert, and of saying what is still allowed rather than only what has been banned.

THE PATTERN TO BORROW
Define the term inside the alert. Medford's post is a Red Flag Warning notice that also explains what a Red Flag Warning is, in two sentences, without condescension. Agencies repeat these phrases so often they stop hearing them as jargon. The residents who most need the warning are usually the ones encountering the phrase for the first time.
