THE QUESTION THIS WEEK
How Minnesota governments are talking about parks and trails on social media
Thirty-five Minnesota localities posted about parks, trails and playgrounds in the last six weeks, including one apology for a broken splash pad.

THE SIGNAL
Minnesota's park posts this summer were mostly good news — groundbreakings, new equipment, a playground rehomed. The most instructive one is the exception: a two-sentence apology about equipment that stopped working. How a city writes about the thing that broke tells residents more about the page than how it writes about the ribbon cutting.

HOW MN GOVERNMENTS ARE SAYING IT
| CITY OF PRINCETON |
214 engagements |
“You may have noticed the addition of the extra-large shade canopy being installed next to the playground. Outdoor exercise equipment is also expected to be installed underneath the shade canopy later this year!” The move: Explained the thing residents had already seen going up, then said what comes next and what is being replaced. Groundbreaking coverage that answers the question people were already asking each other.
|
| SPRING LAKE TOWNSHIP |
68 engagements |
“We asked for community input, and you responded with valuable perspectives on how our trails are used.” The move: Closed the loop on an e-bike and trail etiquette consultation it had opened weeks earlier, rather than letting the request for input be the last anyone heard about it.
|
| CITY OF JORDAN |
39 engagements |
“The Splash Pad at Lagoon Park is currently out of order, but will hopefully be back up and running on Thursday. Sorry!” The move: Twenty-two words, including an apology. When a resident asked later whether it was fixed, the city answered with the real reason — the computer needed reprogramming — instead of a status word.

| CITY OF MOUNTAIN IRON |
110 engagements |
“By giving quality playground equipment a new life, we're creating even more opportunities for children to play, explore, and make memories in one of our community's beautiful parks.” The move: Explained that the playground was moved from a learning centre to a city park rather than bought new. The provenance is the story.

THE PATTERN TO BORROW
Apologise in twenty words and mean it. Jordan's splash pad post is the smallest item in this edition and the one most worth copying. It states the problem, gives a hopeful date, says sorry, and stops. The follow-up in the comments — the computer needs reprogramming, so we ran the water as long as we could — is the kind of specific, slightly unpolished detail that makes a page believable the next time it says something matters.
