THE SIGNAL
Michigan's August primary produced an enormous volume of purely administrative posting from clerks: ballots mailed, early voting hours, envelope instructions. The craft question is narrow and useful — how do you make a procedural detail memorable enough that a voter actually does it? The four posts below are all logistics, and one of them solves a problem that invalidates real ballots every cycle.
THE PATTERN TO BORROW
Name the object, not the step. Commerce Township did not write ‘remember to sign your ballot envelope.’ It wrote ‘the purple return envelope,’ and then said what happens if you do not. A voter holding an unfamiliar stack of paper can act on a colour. Procedural instructions become memorable at exactly the point where they attach to something physical the reader is looking at.
HOW MI GOVERNMENTS ARE SAYING IT
CHARTER TOWNSHIP OF COMMERCE 74 engagements
“When returning your ballot, remember to sign the purple return envelope where indicated. Ballots cannot be counted unless the return envelope is signed.”
The move: Named the envelope by colour and stated the consequence of forgetting. Missing signatures are among the most common reasons a returned ballot is not counted.

CASS COUNTY 222 engagements
“Cass County voters will have four unique ‘I Voted’ sticker designs to choose from when they cast their ballots later this summer, thanks to the creativity of four local high school students.”
The move: Ran a student design contest and then published the winners by name and school. A civic-participation story that gets shared by families rather than skipped as administrative.

CITY OF ST. CLAIR SHORES 70 engagements
“If you are on the permanent ballot list or applied for an Absent Voter Ballot, keep an eye on your mailbox, they will be arriving in the next few days.”
The move: Told voters when to start watching the post, then gave the tracking link and the clerk's direct phone number and email in the same post.

CITY OF KALAMAZOO 130 engagements
“Early voting is underway for the August Election, and City of Kalamazoo voters can vote any day through Sunday, August 2. Early voting is available daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.”
The move: Four named locations with full addresses and one set of hours that applies to all of them, which is far easier to remember than four different schedules.
