THE SIGNAL
Kansas cities spent the summer switching on signals and converting intersections, and the interesting variable is candour. A city that says ‘this took longer than any of us would have liked’ gets thanked; a city that announces a change with no reasoning gets asked who it consulted. The posts below sit at the honest end of that range.

THE PATTERN TO BORROW
Name the delay before residents do. The strongest single move here is Basehor's: say out loud that it took too long. Pre-empting the complaint in the city's own voice changes what the comment section is for. Beyond that, describe what the driver will physically see (Bel Aire lists the blinking signs and markings) and give the in-between phase its own dates — Pittsburg's flashing-yellow week is the exact period when an intersection gets misread.

We know this roadway improvement project took much longer than any of us would have liked, but we are excited to have the roadway open for the community in advance of the new school year. As a reminder, the City received $5.1 million in federal grant funding” The move: Named the frustration before residents could. Acknowledging the delay in the city's own voice is what turned the thread into thanks rather than complaints.

“Starting August 10, the intersection at 53rd Street and Woodlawn will be converted to a four-way stop to improve safety and help reduce the risk of future accidents. In addition to installing blinking LED stop signs in all four directions with new pavement markings, stop ahead signs will be added to improve visibility and give drivers advance notice as they approach the intersection.” The move: Listed every physical thing a driver will see — blinking LED signs, new markings, advance warning — so the change is recognisable before you reach it.

“The City has installed new traffic signals at the intersection of 3rd Street and Broadway. Starting on Monday, August 3, through August 9, 2026, signals will be flashing yellow. On August 10, 2026, the traffic signals will be fully activated.” The move: Published the flashing-yellow week as its own phase with dates. The transition period is exactly when drivers are most likely to misread an intersection.
