THE QUESTION THIS WEEK
How Florida governments are communicating a road closure online
One hundred and two Florida localities posted about roads in the last six weeks. The best of them treated the detour as the story, and the reopening as news worth its own post.
|
| 📍 102 FL localities posted about roads & traffic · 247 posts · July 10 – August 20 |

|
THE SIGNAL
Closure posts are the most-forwarded thing most Florida governments publish, and the craft is unglamorous: say which lanes, say how long, mark the detour, and come back when it is over. The four below cover the whole arc — the warning, the total closure, the state-project explainer, and the reopening that beat its own schedule.
|
|
THE PATTERN TO BORROW
Post the reopening, not just the closure. The arc matters more than any single notice. Say ‘total closure’ when you mean it — Plant City spells it out because ‘road work’ is routinely read as one-lane-open. Explain roads you do not own: Flagler County fields the questions about an FDOT project because residents call the county first. And come back when it opens — Lake Wales' reopening post outperformed its own closure notice.

HOW FL GOVERNMENTS ARE SAYING IT
| LAKE WALES |
997 engagements |
“S.R. 60 Railroad Crossing reopens six days ahead of schedule. State Road 60 between Bartow and Lake Wales has officially reopened to all eastbound and westbound traffic following the early completion of essential railroad crossing repairs by CSX. Originally scheduled to conclude on Monday, August 10, crews finished work six days ahead of schedule” The move: Posted the reopening as loudly as the closure, and said how far ahead of schedule it finished. 230 shares — people forward good news about their commute.
|
| PLANT CITY |
384 engagements |
“REMINDER Park Road at E. Baker Street will be closed for 4 days starting July 27. CSX will be completing railroad crossing maintenance during the closure. Detour routes are marked. It is a total closure of ALL travel lanes. No one will be able to cross the tracks until the work is complete.” The move: Spelled out that it is a total closure, because ‘road work’ makes people assume one lane is open. The city answered every ‘when will X be paved’ question in the thread.
|
| FLAGLER COUNTY |
199 engagements |
“Flagler County officials are letting residents know that the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is planning to resurface State Road 100 from the Putnam County border, at the northern end of Crescent Lake, to U.S. 1 in Bunnell. The purpose of this project is to maintain the roadway and enhance safety” The move: Explained a state project the county does not control, and said so. Residents ask their county first regardless of whose road it is.
|
| POLK COUNTY |
181 engagements |
“On July 21, the Polk County Board of County Commissioners approved a $2.15 million contract with Ajax Paving Industries of Florida, LLC. for construction services for the Kathleen Road and Deeson Road signalization project in Lakeland. The project will add new traffic signals, extend existing turn lanes and construct a new southbound right hand turn lane” The move: Turned a consent-agenda contract award into a plain description of what will physically appear at the intersection.
