THE SIGNAL
California libraries spent this summer moving, renovating, hiring and running programmes, which meant a steady stream of posts about disruption. What separates the good ones is a refusal to be vague: which services survive the renovation, who the new staff member actually is, what happens when a free class fills up. Four cities and a county doing that work.

THE PATTERN TO BORROW
Say which services survive. Butte County's renovation post could have said the branches are temporarily relocating. Instead it lists the four things you can still do at the satellite sites. That sentence is the difference between a resident driving over and a resident calling to ask. Every disruption post has a version of this list, and most of them leave it out.

Those whose schedules or needs cannot be accommodated may be added to the program's waiting list.” The move: Posted the free English conversation programme in English and Spanish with the capacity stated up front, then posted the ‘we have reached capacity’ update in the same thread.
